Meet the inspiring students receiving the Justin Beutel Memorial Scholarship

Meet the inspiring students receiving the Justin Beutel Memorial Scholarship

Scottsdale, Ariz – August 24, 2020 – TechForce Foundation has the privilege to award the Justin Beutel Memorial Scholarship to qualified, dedicated and passionate motorcycle technician students. The two students recently selected to receive the award both show strong dedication to their education and exhibit exceptional drive and tenacity.

Congratulations to Jazmine (left) and Elizabeth (right), students at Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix, Arizona! Both women show a passion for, and commitment to, their motorcycle technician training, having exhibited great persistence to pursue their education.

Scholarship recipients Jazmine and Elizabeth stand in a motorcycle technician classroom on either side of a white motorcycle.

A shared dream

We asked Jazmine and Elizabeth what their dream technician careers would look like. From their answers, we found they have more in common than simply their interest in motorcycles.

Jazmine writes, “I have always had an interest in the ’Investigate and Resolve’ aspect of my career. I have a passion for motorcycles and have been riding one for over 5 years. My dream career would be to own an all-female operating motorcycle shop.”

Elizabeth shares Jazmine’s dream of owning her own shop, “My dream career is owning a motorcycle garage where I service motorcycles and I train others to do the same and to learn the methods of business… in this garage I will have the ability to train people who are recovering from addiction, or perhaps have been in prison. In addition, this garage will have a “hang-out” space. As my business grows, I will invest back into tech schools, to see other people receive training.”

Jasmine and Elizabeth’s shared dream of owning their own shop reflects the spirit of the Award’s namesake, Harley Davidson Master Mechanic Justin Beutel. In 2018 Justin’s life was tragically ended by an intruder on his family’s property, only a few short months after achieving his dream of founding a motorcycle shop of his own. Although he is deeply missed, Justin is remembered by those who loved him through this award.

Getting to know the winners: Jazmine

Scholarship recipient Jazmine stands in a motorcycle technician classroom next to a white motorcycle.Jazmine is very tenacious. “My rule of thumb when working is to do what I can, when I can, while I can. Every job is important no matter how small. I always have a “can-do” attitude towards completing my work and take pride in my work ethic.”

Her “do-what-I-can” attitude applies to her community as well. “I make it a point to be kind, respectful, compassionate and empathetic towards all that I come across. I have always been an active volunteer for The Humane Society, Operation Kindness, and Meals on Wheels,” she writes.

Jazmine is committed to her education. It is the promise of charting her own course that keeps her motivated, “Between school and work I am pulling in around 75 hours per week. It’s exhausting and sometimes I wonder ‘Why am I doing this at all?’ especially during a pandemic. But I do it because I know I am working towards something… I am in the point in my life where I know what I want to do, where I want to be, and who I want to be. I continue every day to hustle, do my best and make sure that all the sacrifices I’ve made to get me where I am, will have not been made in vain.”

Getting to know the winners: Elizabeth

Scholarship recipient Elizabeth stands in a motorcycle technician classroom next to a white motorcycle.Elizabeth is a strong advocate for trade careers, and she leads by example. Her outlook on life has been shaped by experience, “It has been my life experience that hard work, honesty and reliability are the means to success. Learning a trade presents the opportunity to contribute to society and to generate income without acquiring great debt. I have children whom I have taught to work in order to afford the things that they want. I have been successful in supporting my children through hard work and am excited to add another trade to that foundation… hard labor is good for the soul, and completing physical tasks is therapeutic, building confidence and self-esteem.”

In addition to school and work, Elizabeth also volunteers time to support her community. “I’ve done community service with Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. I helped start an unconventional church and serve food weekly, while also providing emotional support to members. I also volunteer in my daughters’ schools, helping to chaperone.”

The recent pandemic has not changed Elizabeth’s drive, “It is very important to continue even through such hard and unpredictable events. I am sending a very strong and very clear message to my three daughters and classmates – CONTINUE ON, within reason and with careful consideration, do not quit, do not stop. This is the hardest thing I have ever done, and I will view this as a success if I have uplifted those around me as I have moved forward.”

The Award

Congratulations again to Jazmine and Elizabeth on their selection to receive the Justin Beutel Memorial Scholarship! The funds awarded to each student will help with the costs of pursuing their motorcycle technician training.

Bertoti Family announces memorial scholarship to continue in perpetuity

By Greg Settle, TechForce Foundation Director of National Initiatives

TechForce Foundation® Willy Bertoti Memorial Scholarship to Continue in Perpetuity

At Pottstown High School memorial gathering, Bertoti family
announces the Memorial Scholarship to continue in Willy’s memory

Pottstown, PA – October 5, 2019 – It has been five years since Willy Bertoti, an automotive instructor at Pottstown High School in Pottstown, PA passed away unexpectedly. Willy made an impact on everyone his life touched, and especially his students. To honor Willy, friends and co-workers set up the Willy Bertoti Memorial Scholarship Fund with TechForce Foundation, shortly after his passing. To date, there have been seven scholarship recipients receiving support to attend Universal Technical Institute in Exton, PA.

On Saturday, October 5th, a celebration was held at Pottstown High School in honor of Willy. The memorial was organized by the Federation of Pottstown Teachers, among which Willy counted many friends. A small grassy area next to the school’s football field was set aside and dedicated in his memory as a place for reflection and meditation. The special area now is home to a beautiful shade tree, surrounded by flowers. To complete the memorial setting, a very special bench was unveiled, hand-built over many hours by the current automotive class students, constructed mostly from truck parts.

The overarching theme throughout the celebration, as one person after another recalled their memories of Willy, was how much difference one caring person can make in the lives of others.

At the closing of the celebration, Willy’s widow Dolores, along with her son Christopher, announced that the Memorial Scholarship Fund is being set up as a perpetual fund to ensure Pottstown High School students will always benefit from the support of the fund, and to ensure Willy’s memory will live on.

Donations to the fund can be made to the Willy Bertoti Memorial Scholarship Fund at https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/TECHFORCE/team/WilliamLBertoti

Student profile: Daimler Trucks North America ‘Finish First’ scholarship recipient Twyla

Student receives Daimler Trucks North America ‘Finish First’ scholarship

Meet Twyla. Thanks to TechForce Foundation’s “Daimler Trucks North America ‘Finish First’ MSAT” Scholarship, Twyla completed her advanced technician training earlier this summer and is now pursuing her dream of a career as a professional transportation technician.

A portrait of Twyla, recipient of Daimler Trucks North America's Finish First Scholarship

TechForce Foundation heard from Twyla before her graduation, as she reflected on her career choice and the doors her scholarship opened for her.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been fascinated with the concept of how things work, how they interact with each other, and being able to take things apart and put them back together. I used to watch my stepdad repair vehicles in his garage as a child.” Twyla said, explaining how she first discovered her interest in transportation technician careers. “As I got older, I became more and more interested in learning how components work and worked with each other. Now that I am pursuing my dreams of being a technician, I want to pass down the knowledge to my daughter.”

“…being a technician… is like doing a puzzle. You figure out what the problem is, and then you fix it. I love it!”

Like many aspiring technicians Twyla began her education on her own in her garage at home in New Mexico. When Twyla was admitted to a professional technician training program in Phoenix, Ariz. Twyla was faced with a new set of challenges, not the least of which was the time away from family.

“Moving away from home has, by far, been the hardest obstacle I have ever had to overcome,” said Twyla. “I put my life on hold to get an education so I can provide a good future for my daughter. Being away from her is a hard obstacle, but knowing how much she looks up to me is what motivates me to keep going.”

Despite facing these challenges, once on campus Twyla chose to donate her time, insight and technical expertise to support her classmates, “I am a Peer Mentor to other students here on campus. I listen and give advice whenever students come to me with questions or for help.”

Twyla completed her manufacturer’s advanced training earlier this summer. “I really enjoy working on diesels/trucks. To me, being a technician… diagnosing and repairing a fault is like doing a puzzle. You figure out what the problem is, and then you fix it. I love it!”

Congratulations, Twyla! Thank you Daimler Trucks North America for your support of transportation technician students and Career and Technical Education through TechForce Foundation’s scholarships.

FORD, FUTURETECH SUCCESS CAMPAIGN SEEK TO HIGHLIGHT AUTOMOTIVE CAREERS

The logo of Ford Motor Company, a partner in TechForce Foundation's FutureTech Success campaign

Scottsdale, Ariz. — December 5, 2018 — Ford Motor Company is continuing to work with the TechForce Foundation to inspire tomorrow’s workforce of automotive technicians through a new FutureTech Success® campaign. This initiative will send the message to current and future techs that Ford respects, appreciates and champions trained technicians.

TechForce Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), has a mission to champion students to and through their education and into careers as professional technicians. The FutureTech Success campaign was developed to ignite the passion and sense of purpose in students who love working with their hands. The campaign works to reposition the image of the technical profession as a high-tech, in-demand, and rewarding career choice.

“The automotive industry is facing a significant shortage of qualified automotive service technicians,” said Antonietta Polsinelli, Technical Placement Manager. “With this collaboration, we are proud to support and motivate students who have demonstrated an aptitude toward technical skills to consider the opportunities a career as an automotive service technician can provide.”

Ford Motor Company has previously worked with TechForce by providing scholarships for technical education, but wanted to work to help students earlier. This program exposes students to advancements in auto manufacturing.

“We are thrilled Ford is continuing this collaboration through support of FutureTech Success as well as the scholarship program,” said Jennifer Maher, CEO and Executive Director of TechForce Foundation. “When techs rock, America rolls, and with Ford on board with their leading technology, we will educate and spur excitement within the next generation of automotive technicians.”

Student Pursues Passion with Support from TechForce Ambassador Program

Student Pursues His Passion, with Support from TechForce Foundation®

Andrew’s dream career is to build custom motorcycles. He stumbled across his passion while growing up in Northern Idaho. Like many future technicians Andrew tinkered with machines, pulling apart dirt bikes to repair them, or just to see how things worked.

“I can finally say that I am fully
passionate about my career.”

Over the years Andrew kept his passion alive as a hobby. He worked on dirt bikes and motorcycles in his free time, but it was not until he found himself feeling stuck in his desk job that Andrew decided to make the switch to a career he is passionate about.

Andrew initially looked into a more traditional four-year education, but found that classroom learning was not for him. In his own words, Andrew is “a very hands on learner”. Through a stroke of luck, Andrew learned of technical school from a good friend, while helping them work on their motorcycle. Since that day Andrew has not looked back.

Andrew is currently enrolled at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, and feels very optimistic about his future prospects, “Having my degree will open many doors down the road, and I can finally say that I am fully passionate about my career.”

Congratulations to Andrew for being awarded a $3,000 tuition scholarship and for being accepted into the TechForce Ambassador program. TechForce Foundation is proud to support Andrew’s technical education in pursuit of his passion and future career.

TechForce Announces $10,000 Brienne Davis Scholarship Winner

Congratulations to Angelina who was awarded a $10,000 NASCAR / Brienne Davis Memorial Tuition Scholarship.

Ever since Angelina was a little girl, her family would travel 10 hours to ride sand rails in the desert. Together, with her grandparents and father, they assembled a soap box car from scratch; racing it for four years.

“My dream is to be able to combine my hobby with my career.”

At the age of 14, Angelina began racing quarter midget cars, developing interest and understanding for maintaining all aspects of proper vehicle care. As her passion for riding and working on quads continued, Angelina began racing Micro-Sprint cars through sponsorships from local businesses. Every weekend, Angelina can be found either racing or helping other race teams win. She mentors 5-13 year old kids about the basics of racing, from safety, to changing tires and driving.

“My dream is to be able to combine my hobby with my career. My end goal is to be a part of NASCAR, either as a driver or part of a team. Being a racer myself, I can understand the dedication and commitment it takes to excel in either. To impact the industry, I plan to be a successful woman in a male-dominated field. I want to be respected and make a contribution in a career that I will enjoy.”

Angelina’s career path into technical education embodies her motorsports passion. However, it took some convincing of her parents who anticipated Angelina would attend nursing school. She researched careers in NASCAR to discover that Universal Technical Institute (UTI) had the only NASCAR sponsored program in the entire United States. After conducting her research, Angelina made an appointment with her parents to visit the Sacramento campus. “They were so impressed with my determination and with UTI that I withdrew from school and signed up for UTI.”

Through the assistance of the Brienne Davis Memorial Tuition Scholarship, Angelina is turning her dream into a reality. Following her true calling and having the support from her family, Angelina will surely make great contributions and a serve as a role model for future women technicians.

PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TECHNICIAN STUDENTS

TechForce Foundation Awarding $5,000 in Scholarship Funds to the Arkansas Trucking Association

TechForce Foundation Invests in the Workforce Readiness of Arkansas Diesel Technicians by Awarding $5,000 in Scholarship Funds to the Arkansas Trucking Association

TechForce Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit purposed with championing students as they pursue their technical education and careers as professional technicians in the transportation industry, has granted the Arkansas Trucking Association (ATA) $5,000 to award financially disadvantaged students with tuition scholarships so they may attend any of the accredited diesel/heavy truck technical programs throughout Arkansas.

The current technician shortage spans every inch of the industry, and the solution to this problem lies in unity. Through its support of the ATA, TechForce Foundation demonstrates its commitment to working closely with each facet of the world of transportation tech to be the voice of that united front.

Major industry pillars, such as trucking, have the power to drastically affect the overall health of the industry—and the diesel technicians in training today are the force that will uphold that pillar in the not-so-distant future. The logistics and transportation industry connects every corner of the nation, providing vital services through the distribution of the goods and materials utilized in virtually every aspect of the United States economy.

“Trucks have to keep rolling in order for the U.S. to maintain a healthy, stable economy, and diesel mechanics are what keep those trucks rolling,” explains Jennifer Maher, CEO of TechForce Foundation. “TechForce is partnering with the ATA to empower students pursuing education and careers as diesel technicians, and to ensure this highly-skilled workforce necessary to maintain our country’s economic stability is readily available.”

The ATA’s mission is straightforward: look out for the collective interests of the trucking industry through raising awareness of how integral the field is to the American economy and serve its members to promote growth and prosperity. TechForce Foundation’s message is much the same. The transportation industry plays a major role in so much more than the average individual is aware. It’s what keeps America moving forward, and the foundation of that movement is the technician workforce.

TechForce Foundation and the ATA look forward to the ways in which their partnership will aid aspiring diesel/heavy truck technicians on the road to achieving a quality technical education and becoming the industry’s much needed, highly-skilled workforce.

No Venture Too Big In Snap-on’s Dedication to Future Technicians

Snap-on has a very specific vision in their backing of TechForce Foundation and our mission to encourage and support students pursuing post-secondary technical education and careers in the transportation industry. Opting to target donations toward Strong Start grants over traditional tuition scholarships shows a focus on the personal well-being of the techs themselves. Strong Start grants aid students in relocation, an often necessary and pricy step in pursuing Advanced Training programs. These grants may cover moving costs and first thirty days startup expenses such as utilities, security deposits, and first month’s rent and food. The cash grants supported by Snap-on provide an all-encompassing, unwavering support system for the budding technician, and show a true commitment to the bright future of the industry as a whole.

In addition to their backing of Strong Start grants, Snap-on has also earmarked money to be used in support of the FutureTech Successsm campaign. This campaign, set to launch in May 2017, is TechForce Foundation’s surge to fuel the future pipeline of transportation technicians. Snap-on’s partnership with TechForce in fueling this campaign will help us reach out to young individuals interested in pursuing technical careers, aiding students in discovering an exciting future and providing the industry with much-needed talent. Snap-on recognizes the massive shortage of skilled technicians necessary to keep up with the fast-growing and technologically innovative transportation industry, and is taking steps to help remedy the deficit.

Snap-on has also very generously donated tools to TechForce for fundraising purposes. Anyone who has ever been in charge of a fundraising auction before knows just how important it is to have the highest quality, most well regarded items available on the block in order to meet a monetary goal. The largest single supplier of the tools utilized in nearly every aspect of the transportation industry donating their very best for our auction gave us a massive leg up in meeting our goals. We greatly appreciate the generosity displayed by Snap-on in support of TechForce and student technicians everywhere.

TechForce not only enjoys the support of Snap-on through their donations, it is also honored to have Greg Rintala on its Board of Directors. In addition to his position on the TechForce Foundation board, Mr. Rintala serves on the boards of SkillsUSA, ACTE, and I-CAR. His commitment to bettering both technicians and the industry as a whole has led him to work with a variety of organizations, encouraging a sense of unity in purpose. Each organization has unique strengths and goals, and Mr. Rintala sees this as an opportunity for such organizations to work together to help technicians more effectively and in a larger variety of ways.

TechForce and Snap-on look forward to the many ways their synergy will assist future techs in achieving their education and career goals.

Shell Lubricants Featuring Pennzoil and Shell Rotella: A Friendly Face to the Student Tech in Need

Shell Lubricants, featuring Pennzoil and Shell Rotella, has been a true friend to the technician through their alliance with TechForce Foundation. TechForce Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on encouraging and supporting students pursuing post-secondary technical education and careers in the transportation industry. We rely on generous associates, like Shell Lubricants, to aid us in championing future techs to and through their education.

Shell Lubricants, featuring Pennzoil and Shell Rotella, recognizes that the techs in training today will become the techs supporting and utilizing their products tomorrow, and seek to build that relationship from the get-go. This foresight and commitment to the future of the industry is admirable. Shell Lubricants’ personal interest in each individual future technician has led them to largely support Life Happens emergency grants. Fully aware that there are just some expenses you cannot put off until after schooling, Shell Lubricants has committed to keeping techs in school no matter what life throws their way. This aid is delivered in the form of on-campus food pantries, as well as on-the-spot emergency relief grants including gas and prepaid cards. Providing students with the help needed to overcome unforeseen circumstances that could potentially derail their education shows Shell Lubricants’ sincere care for the students themselves, as well as a pledge to preserve the bright future of the industry.

In addition to supporting students dealing with emergency costs, Shell Lubricants has also helped fund Pedal to the Metal scholarships, helping students financially in their pursuit of advanced training. Advanced training programs are manufacturer-specific programs that allow students to hone in their skills in a target field. As a lubricant company, Shell Lubricants does not have an advanced training program dedicated to their brand; this allows students receiving financial help through Pedal to the Metal scholarships funded by Shell Lubricants to pursue whichever advanced track they wish to. This demonstrates yet another way Shell Lubricants is committed to bettering each and every tech on their individual journey to achieve their dreams.

Shell Lubricants’ support of TechForce Foundation and our mission does not stop there, though. They have also provided great help to the Foundation itself through lending their marketing expertise and branding managers to help us get started. Their commitment to and relationship with the Foundation in order to bring about the shared goal of supporting technicians in achieving their dreams has been steadfast throughout. This very generous aid helped kick-start the Foundation in enacting our purpose, and for this we are deeply grateful.

TechForce Foundation and Shell Lubricants, featuring Pennzoil and Shell Rotella, look forward to this continued alliance in enabling student techs to overcome the curveballs life may throw their way on the road to achieving the education and careers of their dreams.
