TechForce Foundation Launches “Grab the Wheel” Campaign for Future Techs

Steering Futures: TechForce Foundation Launches "Grab the Wheel" Campaign for Future Techs

New initiative aims to accelerate the next generation of skilled technicians

August 30, 2023  PHOENIX — As Labor Day approaches, honoring the perseverance and dedication of workers, TechForce Foundation proudly initiates the “Grab the Wheel” campaign,  a crucial effort to help young people find a technical education and career that fits.

“Too many students are being forced down the 4-year university path, which may not be the best fit for them. For those who love problem solving, working with their hands, and the rising technology enveloping the transportation (AKA: mobility) sector today, a technical education and skilled technician career can be wonderfully rewarding,” explains Jennifer Maher, CEO of TechForce Foundation, a national nonprofit 501(c)(3).

With a clear objective to inspire the next generation of technicians who will keep America rolling, this campaign zeroes in on students aged 13-24 who are still considering what they want to be when they grow up. “They’re looking for options, freedom, and a chance to design their lives the way they’re wired to work,” explains Angie Babin, Chair of the TechForce Foundation board of directors. “These young individuals are at a pivotal stage, eager to identify a path that merges their personal inclinations with prosperous futures. That’s why we’re encouraging them to ‘Grab the Wheel,’ explore their options, and consider the tech profession.”

“It’s about helping them connect their unique strengths and passions to meaningful work that makes them happy and fulfilled. GenZ’s motto is ‘You Be You,’ and we agree,” affirms Maher. “If you don’t want to sit at a desk the rest of your life, sign up for four more years of academia, or just love engines and making things work, you can go further, faster with a tech career.”

The campaign will have its presence felt all year, with launch efforts coinciding with Labor Day. The ambition is clear: welcome one million new entry-level technicians over the next five years to meet a pressing workforce demand. Whether students are excited by auto, collision, aviation, diesel, EV, motorsports, or welding, techs are in high demand across all sectors.

“Labor Day is a stark reminder of the essential role technicians play. If your car started today, thank a tech. If your airplane arrived safely, thank a tech. These are the individuals who ensure continuity in our everyday lives. By rallying together, we can ensure a future where technology and transport remain resilient,” adds Maher.

TechForce Foundation calls on everyone to help amplify the message on Labor Day, September 4, 2023, by using social media channels to like, comment, or share “Grab the Wheel” content, ensuring the essence of the campaign reaches its intended audience. BASF launches Techs for Tomorrow Scholarship & Industry Experience at SEMA with TechForce Foundation

August 29, 2023  SOUTHFIELD, MI — Five lucky winners will get the experience of a lifetime at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, thanks to a program that encourages up-and-coming talent.  Working in partnership with TechForce Foundation, BASF is now soliciting nominations for its “Techs for Tomorrow.”

“One of the biggest challenges facing the collision repair industry in the next few years is a labor crunch. We need to find talented people to fill the pipeline as jobs open up,” said Joel Johnson, BASF’s vice president of Refinish Coatings. “’Techs for Tomorrow’ is our way to get the next generation excited about the refinish industry, with its opportunities for high-paying, stable careers as painters and body shop technicians.”

“Techs for Tomorrow” is part of BASF’s “Talent for Tomorrow” program that includes scholarships, mentoring, apprenticeships, paint program support for technical schools and initiatives such as Operative Talent focused on attracting talent. “By supporting these students and their technical education, we’re working to make our industry’s workforce sustainable,” said Johnson.

“Techs for Tomorrow” winners will get the chance to walk the floor at the (industry-only, non-public) SEMA show, network with a BASF Refinish team member as well as custom vehicle builders to meet and engage with industry experts. The award also includes a $2,500 scholarship to continue their education in the collision repair industry. Five finalists will get a $500 scholarship.

“TechForce Foundation is excited to expand our partnership with BASF to offer the ‘Techs for Tomorrow’ program,” says TechForce CEO Jennifer Maher. “By offering scholarships, mentorship, and exciting ways to engage with industry, we’re not just shaping careers – we’re nurturing students’ dreams, fostering innovation, and building a resilient workforce that will drive the entire mobility industry forward.”

Nominees must be 18 years or older, enrolled in an accredited collision training program, able to travel to Las Vegas during the SEMA show, and must submit their application through TechForce Foundation.

LKQ Corporation partners with TechForce Foundation to build the technician workforce

LKQ Corporation partners with TechForce Foundation to build the technician workforce

August 8, 2023 – PHOENIX — LKQ Corporation, through the LKQ Community Foundation, and TechForce Foundation have entered into a strategic partnership to support students pursuing a technical education and career as a professional transportation technician.

LKQ, the largest provider of alternative vehicle collision replacement products, is concerned over the seriousness of the automotive and collision technician shortage and wants to be part of the solution. Currently there are 5 jobs available for every student graduating tech school. Therefore, LKQ has donated $50,000 to support TechForce Foundation’s charitable programs, including a nationwide public service campaign recognizing the value and importance of skilled technicians, its FutureTechs Rock and Techs Rock awards, and TechForce, the first of its kind, gamified online community of aspiring and working technician to find tech schools, scholarships, events, apprenticeships and jobs.

“LKQ knows the importance of skilled technicians; they are the backbone of the automotive and collision industries,” says Justin Jude, President of LKQ North America-Wholesale. “Part of LKQ’s mission is to build strong partnerships in the communities in which we operate, and we are proud to partner with TechForce, a leading nonprofit committed to helping young people discover and successfully pursue the technician career.”

“TechForce helps students find a technical education and career that fits,” explains TechForce’s executive director, Jennifer Maher. “Let’s consider Hayden, a recent TechForce scholarship and grant recipient. He was never made aware of the rewarding career opportunities in mobility and, as a result, spent a decade working jobs he did not enjoy. Fortunately, Hayden discovered his passion, returned to an automotive tech program with TechForce’s support at age 30, and could not be happier with his new career as a professional technician.” TechForce inspires and supports students like Hayden at all stages in their career journeys.

Maher continued, “Not everyone wants to go the 4-year university path. For those who love problem-solving and working with their hands, a technical career may be a perfect fit. We are proud to welcome LKQ as a partner in our work to change the public perception of these high-tech STEM careers.”
